"I am very sorry I cannot be with you today in New York, but I wanted to send you my warm greetings and best wishes for this next stage of the initiative launched by Antenna Group and the Atlantic Council to strengthen cooperation between Europe and the Gulf. I believe the situation we face, with the Strait of Hormuz still blocked and a new front of instability at Bab el-Mandeb, makes it clear that Europe and the Gulf have more interests in common than we have traditionally assumed. Our prosperity depends on lasting peace, open trade, secure connections and shared rules, starting with freedom of navigation, without tolls or discriminatory restrictions. This is why we must work ever more closely together, today and in the years ahead. This is a goal the Italian Government has pursued since taking office, marking significant milestones along the way. I am thinking of Italy’s participation as guest of honour at the Gulf Cooperation Council Summit, the Europe Gulf Forum in Costa Navarino, the Future Investment Initiative hosted in Rome last June, and many other opportunities for dialogue and cooperation. I believe the time has come to steer our investments towards a shared goal: making it harder to strike at us and more costly to divide us. Connecting our markets, establishing alternative routes, strengthening infrastructure, and jointly developing technologies and defence capabilities all serve precisely this purpose. This work must begin immediately, even as we seek – with persistence and determination – a lasting solution to the current crisis. I hope this meeting will provide further confirmation that Europe and the Gulf are ready to take greater responsibility for the security, development and well-being of our peoples.
